Question about Wickham's future   Written by Line (2/15/2004 10:31 p.m.)
Are you new?

In his follow-up letter to his brother-in-law, Mr. Gardiner says that Wickham "has the promise of an ensigncy in General -- 's regiment". Can anybody tell me how high an ensign's rank was? Would Wickham be doing well, or would he be starting over close to the bottom of the totem pole? I don't think P&P ever mentions his rank in the militia, but I wonder if his new rank would be a promotion, a demotion, more of the same, or if the the regulars and the militia were so different that there was no comparing the two.

Also, Mr. Gardiner writes that "[Wickham] promises fairly". Does he simply mean that Wickham always makes a good first impression, or does he mean something else?
