First, I think it is entirely possible to recognize criticism, etc., directed at someone else and not recognize it when it is directed at oneself.
Second, I do not think that "vexing" or teasing and set-downs are the same. In the scenes related to visiting Mr. Bingley, what do you see as a "set-down"?
