Very plausible   Written by kathleen (elder) (2/15/2004 10:26 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Wickham and Lydia, penned by Captain Everett
Are you new?

Lydia's letter to Mrs Forster certainly started the search NOT in London. By the time there were people looking in London, Wickham & Lydia were already "hidden."

I agree that Wickham was likely to just leave Lydia without any prior notice. The fact that he didn't do it immediately might mean that he had no other place to stay.

Very lucky for Lydia that Darcy knew where to start his search for the two of them. I have to think that Mr Bennet would not have been prevailed upon to accept Miss Lydia Bennet back home after she had lived with Wickham for a couple of weeks.
