] After all these years I thought it prudent to check my understanding of why Lydia's elopement is so dreadful. I have always assumed it is because she lived with Wickham before being married. However the wealth of info and analysis on these pages suggests I might well have missed something?

In reading another JA book, I had a similar question about secret engagements. I asked the question on the Life and Times page, and I got a good answer from Meg H, which I have linked below. While of course there are differences between elopments and secret engagements, I think they were considered problematic for similar reasons.
