| Keeping the servants in the dark

One thing that has always bothered me about P&P is the way even Elizabeth insists on trying to keep the servants in the dark about Lydia's elopement - it seems so Victorian - prim and snobbish. In the first place, IMO she'd have more important things on her mind, second, it's obviously useless, and in the third place, I guess it just offends my democratic sensibilities - Longbourn is the servants' home as well as the Bennets', and they're supposed to stay unaware of an event that affects the whole household? I must admit that after reading The Gentleman's Daughter, I have a better understanding of why the Bennets might not trust their servants, but it still bothers me!
