I should have made it clear that I was only talking about the adaptation.

In the novel there is nothing to make one think that he didn't come in a chaise. The Longbourn ladies don't see him until he comes to call on Mr. Bennet, and then they can only see that he wears a blue coat.

I had just picked up on this bit in the adaptation this time around, however. I think it's a wonderful touch that Mrs Bennet's info is not correct in this matter as in so many others. ;)
