] I took this mean that they had slept in an inn. I might be wrong :)

I agree with this interpretation. Without headlights, or a very bright moon, it would be very dangerous to travel by carriage overnight, since it would be difficult to see the road.

We might say today that we drove for two full days, spending only one night along the way -- not by the side of the road nor by driving all night, but sleeping in a motel, for example.
