] First, I don't think that Denny and W. were particularly close friends...

On the other hand, Elizabeth did think they were close. She told Mr. Gardiner: "'His most particular friend, you see by Jane's account, was persuaded of his never intending to marry her.'"

I suppose we could think that Lizzie jumped to this conclusion because of the way Denny introduced Wickham, and Wickham never bothered to correct her impression.
