Denny   Written by Sylvia (2/10/2004 12:26 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Perhaps, penned by JulieW
Are you new?

We all know that Lydia had a major thing for Denny until Wickam showed up. I can imagine that Denny wasn't at all happy about Wickam stealing his girl.

We all know that Lydia isn't very good at keeping quiet. We also know that Kitty is in the know about Lydia and Wickam eloping as well as Mrs. Forester. Lydia could very likely have informed Denny about it as well in her exuberance, Wickam finds out about it and threatens Denny if he tells anyone. Wickam intimidates Denny so of course Denny doesn't tell the truth right away. Later Denny tells the truth in revenge against Wickam for threatening him and stealing his girl; revenge against Lydia for dumping him; and he doesn't exactly want to lose his job.

About Denny making apologies to Elizabeth at the party; Wickam could have started making subtle comments about Mr. Darcy by then that at that time the community would have started to find out about. Of course the people that Wickam lives with day in and day out are going to be some of the first to know. So, Wickam probably uses Denny (he knows that he intimidates Denny) to give Elizabeth the message. Nobody suspects anything between Lydia and Wickam too much at this point so Denny isn't really going to be jealous. He's honored and glad to give the message to Elizabeth.
