Possibly Denny was thinking ill of Darcy.Although I think he's apathetic. My impression is he's rather influenced by Wickham. He probably closes his eyes (or 'Denny denies' as someone suggested) to the worst aspects he knows of Wickham. And we know stronger charecters than Denny have been fooled by Wickham's smooth, plausible exterior.
