What does this mean? Did Lizzy expect Miss Darcy on the day of her arriving at Pemberley, or the day after? And, whose arrival at Lambton is she talking about here? We could re-write that paragraph as follows: ELIZABETH had settled it that Mr. Darcy would bring his sister to visit her the very day after Georgiana arrived at Pemberley; and was consequently resolved not to be out of sight of the inn the whole of that morning. But her conclusion was false; for on the very morning after Elizabeth and the Gardiners had arrived at Lambton, Darcy & Georgian came calling. Let's assume that Elizabeth & the Gardiners met Darcy at Pemberley on a Tuesday. They actually stopped at Pemberley on their way to Lambton, so they didn't check into the inn at Lambton until Tuesday afternoon/evening. Georgiana is supposed to arrive the very next day, on a Wednesday in my scenario. Elizabeth assumes that Darcy will bring Georgiana to meet her on Thursday, but they come to the inn on Wednesday instead. |
