]I've noticed that about Wickham as well. He sounds her out about her opinion of Darcy before launching into his tale of woe. It seems to be part of his strategy to find out whether the ground is fertile before he tries planting seeds

IIRC, he does the same thing before saying anything about Col. Fitzwilliam and says good about him once he knows Lizzy's opinion.
