had no idea that wickham had any sort of contact with his sister. If he had, he would have prohibited it right away. That was why wickham had to make Georgiana consent to a secret elopement.

Moreover, it would have been improper for Wickham to actually stay with her in any case. The 'place' probably meant the neighbourhood.
