was also called 'proud', but Elizabeth and Mrs Gardiner soon saw that she was just 'exceeding shy'. Without an opportunity to know her well, it could also be assumed that her apparent standoff-ish behaviour and reluctance to make conversation were due to pride, rather than shyness and 'fear of doing wrong'.
