... that made people consider him proud. His serious, formal, stately manners might make people who didn't know him well believe he was proud, even when that wasn't what he was feeling. It wouldn't need the servants or Wickham to spread the rumour!

As for Mrs. Reynolds, she has been with the Darcy family for decades - I'm sure she would have dealings with the local people and get to hear their opinion of the family.
