Kathi--]Bingley was in love with Jane, and he believed she returned his feelings.

"He had before believed her to return his affection with sincere, if not equal regard."

Sincere, if not equal regard seems pretty thin and weak next to the assertion that he believed that Jane returned his feelings of love.
