Lydia and her sidekick -- Chapter 39   Written by kathleen (elder) (2/3/2004 5:47 a.m.)
Are you new?

In Chapter 39, Elizabeth & Jane (and Maria Lucas) are returning to Meryton from their travels. Lydia & Kitty meet them at an inn for lunch.

Lydia's opening comment always makes me smile: "And we mean to treat you all," added Lydia; "but you must lend us the money, for we have just spent ours at the shop out there." That is such child-like attitude, to want credit for treating her sisters even though she has to borrow the money from them to pay for it. :-)

Later, on the carriage ride home,

With such kind of histories of their parties and good jokes, did Lydia, assisted by Kitty's hints and additions, endeavour to amuse her companions all the way to Longbourn.

I am really struck by the fact that Lydia does all of the talking, with Kitty merely providing hints and additions. Kitty is the sidekick while Lydia is the star! Not two sisters that I would have wished for. Poor Jane & Elizabeth. 8-/
