] So are you saying that you think Mr. Bennet is portrayed differently in P&P2 than he is shown to be in the novel? Or that the tone of his character is different?

...I do think the tone is different in the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet between P&P and P&P2. There seems more genuine affection between the Bennets in P&P2 than I can see in the book. In the book, it seems more obvious that Mr. Benneet is just winding up his wife for his own amusement, with no concern for the effect on either his wife or the household as a whole.
