] My point is that it does not seem to me that Darcy is so far-fetching in assuming Bingley and Jane's attachment to be ephemeral and easily brushed aside.

... why would he think it necessary to separate them? I really believe that Darcy thought Bingley was serious about Jane, or he wouldn't have bothered to keep Bingley from returning to Netherfield. And he wouldn't have concealed Jane's presence in London from Bingley, either. As for what he thought he knew about Jane's feelings, well, I think he convinced himself on that score with very little evidence.
