this is not what really happened, but rather how Elizabeth imagined it

I've never thought of it that way! I've always interpreted those scenes as expressions of what really happened, and not just Elizabeth's perceptions of events. That offers a whole other wrinkle to the story, if all those imagined scenes are filtered through Lizzy's lens.
