What I don't understand is why you eliminate pride from the equation.

I agree that being a houseguest for a long period of time might create a false sense of family -- but without Darcy's pride and his attitude about the evils of connection with the Bennet family, I don't think that that proximity/intimacy alone would have been enough to lead Darcy to interfere in a decision that was none of his business.
