in consequence of the missive, I had often seen him in love before, penned by B. MIchelle
I agree! I've certainly known people like this (both male and female)---always in love with someone, until they "fall in love" with someone else!
]It also justifies, if only a little, what Darcy did.
Yes, it does...a bit. Darcy had seen this scenario often before, and apparently there was nothing that stood out to alert him that this was any different than any of the other times that Bingley was "in love."
]Would he still have tried to separate them if he felt that Jane was in love, but Bingley wasn't? What do you guys think?
Yes, I think he would still have tried to separate them. The line "I had often seen him in love before" say much. Darcy's focus is his friend Bingley, not some girl at a country dance. And in this, I can't fault him. Bingley is his friend, and he will continue to have a relationship with him. And since Bingley has been in love so many times before, Darcy assumes that Jane is just another pretty face. As I was typing the last sentence, a line from a 1970's song popped into my head--"...love the one you're with." Maybe this is Darcy's take on Bingley!
