...let Lizzy read and re-read the letter. It was a device whereby Lizzy could contemplate the information repeatedly. Unlike a conversation which is only heard once and is remembered in snatches, the letter becomes is tangible and not subject to memory. The words make an entreaty that is more reasoned and less subject to the emotions of a conversation.

I think Darcy knew he could trust Lizzy with his confidence.
