I had never thought about this before, but you are right! Darcy did say this and yet he did the very thing he said he abhored!

This is just another instance of the "opposite" that we see in P&P over and over. Just as Lizzy says to Charlotte that she would not marry without knowing her partner, Charlotte does just that. Lizzy thinks Wickham is good and Darcy is bad, just the opposite is true. The book is filled with this stuff. JA leads you down one path, yanks the cord and suddenly you are some place else! Masterful!
