... that she was looking for a colonel whose total income was five or six thousand a year (as rare as a Bingley, I'm sure!), not that he made that much from his job. As I recall, British officers' salaries throughout the 19th century were surprisingly low, because officers were supposed to be members of the aristocracy who were expected to supplement their salaries with a private income (thereby keeping the lower-class "riff-raff" out of the officer corps!). So I think Mrs. Bennet may be wildly over-optimistic in expecting to find such a well-to-do officer for one of her daughters, but she is not over-estimating the money he would make directly from his job.
