in consequence of the missive, I don't think meanness is the concern, penned by Chandra S
Meaness to Georgiana hadn't occured to me. If anything, I can see Caroline and Mrs Hurst fussing and spoiling Georgiana excessively. Caroline would seek to ingratiate herself with Georgiana to try and get Darcy's favour. Yet under Caroline's influence what principles would she learn and what sort of woman would she become ? That is precisely what I was thinking would concern Darcy; the alteration of her charecter into a shallow, brittle woman similiar to Caroline. I know the Bingley sisters make themselves pleasing when they choose to yet they remain superficial. For e.g Lizzy's observation at Netherfield is when Jane was ill they showed all affection and solitude toward Jane. But when Jane wasn't immediately in front of them, they were quite indifferent. That's pretty typical of their attitude towards life and most people. If Darcy did not 'intensely dislike' Caroline, he couldn't like her either. In Ch. 8 she appears to annoy him quite alot. She gives a list of accomplishments for Mr Darcy's benefit yet he rebuffs her with the remark 'and to all this she must add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading'. Even if he does esteem her fashionable accomplishments and there's no doubt Bingley's sisters are fine musicans, singers and conversationalists yet they have poor minds and don't understand people like Darcy or Lizzy. They can be agreeable yes, but often rude and ill-mannered. We know Bingley and Darcy are best friends. Yet their sisters are not on direct acquitance. If Darcy wanted Caroline and Georgiana as friends, why wouldn't he encourage her to write her own letter to Georgiana? At the very least, I cannot believe Darcy is personally impressed by Caroline. BTW; Don't worry about my remark 'Now if Caroline were to make a grand marriage and move away...' that was just a silly joke! Chandra, I hope you don't mind my replying through your post. You express with clarity what I meant about Caroline's 'orbit of influence'(Thanks.) My apologies for any unclear expression. :&
