I found the following info about incomes for army officers, inter. al. (I have linked the entire post below.):

Army Lieutenant-colonel, such as Wickham’s regimental commander - £405 per year; the price of the commission was £1,500.

So it appears that Mrs Bennet is exaggerating a great deal! :-o
