...this hardly seems like an example of the irony that "Theory and real life seldom resemble each other," since there is no relationship between the theory that it is amiable and even admirable to be influenced by one's friends' whims in small decisions and the practice of being influenced in major life decisions by a friend's erroneous information and/or prejudices.

] instead of it being clever foreshadowing with a touch or irony.

With the connection as tenuous as this one, on the other hand, one wonders if it was the author's intention at all.
