] I do think that the attention of another gentleman (whom he probably considered as as equal) could have nudged Darcy a bit.

My only quibble with that is that Darcy probably knows that Col. Fitzwilliam cannot "afford to marry without some attention to money"--which, of course, rules out Elizabeth. But then again, being in love has been known to make people see potential threats where none really exist...
