No, if he were seriously in love with Elizabeth, I think he might find a way! ;-) Though I definitely like the Colonel, there is a touch of selfishness in what he says. He says it himself: "Our habits of expence make us too dependant". He is used to a certain lifestyle, and he is not willing to give it up for Elizabeth's sake. He is the opposite of Charlotte - he has been brought up too high to be comfortable making do with less!
