I thought that the reason this comment was so out of place was that Mrs. Bennet had completely missed what the preceding conversation was about. Mr. Darcy had been referring to the fact that there was not a wide variety of types of people in the country and Mrs. Bennet could only relate to this in terms of quantity. Also, the fact that she had apparently counted the number of families did not show good breeding, in my opinion.
