Too bad....   Written by BarbaraB (1/28/2004 5:49 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Elizabeth's tender feelings for Colonel Fitzwilliam, penned by kathleen (elder)
Are you new?

]I read this as meaning she is flattered by the Colonel's attentions even though she is not in love with him. She knows he will not (cannot) propose, and she isn't going to be upset by that. She is not above wanting to continue the relationship as long as possible, however.

Too bad the Colonel wasn't a first son. If Lizzy had to marry someone she wasn't in love with I still think Lizzy would not be disappointed in her marraige to him. They would get on well together and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't grow into love. It would certainly be the better of the two choices between marrying the Colonel and living to be an old maid with an uncertain future. But, alas, no such luck for our Lizzy.
