Elizabeth would not have said such a thing in Anne De Bourgh's hearing. She made the comment in front of Maria Lucas and nobody else. I doubt that Maria would ever repeat it to Miss De Bourgh, and I doubt that Elizabeth feared that Maria would repeat it.

This comment is of the kind Elizabeth & her father make to each other about their neighbours -- observations that may have been apt, though not always nice -- but never in those neighbours' presence.
