I've thought that before as well. And yes, the Gardiners would have be much better influence on their younger nieces. Kitty and Lydia should never have been allowed to run around with the soldiers and the Gardiners would not have been so complascent. If they lived nearby, how nice too for Jane and Lizzy to have a sensible, caring aunt and uncle to confide in. Mary may've benefitted alittle if she thought she was important enough for someone to take some interest in her! Well, it's been said before; JA did not write of an ideal world. Still, I agree with you!
