(I tried to make that sound like Edith Evans in the old version of The Importance of Being Earnest)

Trade was still something to be despised.Look at Sir William Lucas and his immidiate dropping of his commercial intersts once he was knighted......

Though I think JA did not share or approve of this snobbish attitude, it was certainly present in society at the time( and this attitude persisted for at least 100 years after JA's time)

I suppose it all depened just how much money one made from the trade,and when it could be hidden by the purchase of a suitable estate.Like Charles Bingley hopes to do.Or the marraige of a suitably high ranking wife ;-)

But there is no indication that our Mr Gardiner is as successful as Mr Bingley senior , is there?
