Do we know how old they all are in relation to each other? Perhaps Mr. Gardiner, Sr. (Mrs. Bennet's father) required an heir to his business before Mr. Gardiner, Jr. was of age and abilities to take over. That Mr. Phillips had perhaps shown himself to be capable of the job. And since Mr. Phillips did marry Miss Gardiner, it does stay in the family...
