..but wouldn't success in trade lead his family to stable gentility? It might not happen in his generation, but perhaps he would be able to leave enough fortune for his children or grandchildren to purchase an estate. Bingley-esque.

The elder Mr. Gardiner sounded prosperous enough for an attorney in Meryton. He was able to leave 4000 to Mrs. Bennet and possibly to Mrs. Philips and Mr. Gardiner. Perhaps Mr. Gardiner used his inheritance as capital?
