The elder Mr. Gardiner sounded prosperous enough for an attorney in Meryton. He was able to leave 4000 to Mrs. Bennet and possibly to Mrs. Philips and Mr. Gardiner. Perhaps Mr. Gardiner used his inheritance as capital?
