Shared horses - why?   Written by Anna-Carin (1/11/2004 5:39 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Please I need your help here, penned by Nasima
Are you new?

- But, my dear, your father cannot spare the horses, I am sure. They are wanted in the farm, Mr. Bennett, are not they?

- They are wanted in the farm much oftener than I can get them.

I don't know why I've overlooked it before, but it recently struck me as odd that the Bennets' horses are also used at the farm. Was this a common arrangement, or is JA just hinting that the family is not very well off?

And, as it appearantly was Mr. Bennet's task to secure the horses for the farms' needs, does this imply that he may have been involved in the running of the farm (rather than staying in his library at all times, as in P&P2)?
