... I always found this rather puzzling. I would have thought that it would hurt Elizabeth more to see her shining knight topple off his pedestal, but obviously, JA has it that Elizabeth is more forgiving towards Wickham than towards Charlotte because of her feelings for him.

To me, this is more evidence that at this point in the novel, Elizabeth is not secretly, unconsciously (or however you want to put it) in love with Darcy, but is pretty close to being in love with Wickham.
