True, in P&P2. But there is no indication that Bingley rode on horseback in the novel, or that he brought Darcy along, or that Elizabeth saw Bingley (and/or Darcy). In the novel, then, the chaise-and-four could be truth rather than a mere rumour.

I certainly agree with you about the Meryton rumour mill, however, and I wonder who the biggest contributors are. :-)
