]I think the difference in character between Mr Collins senior and Mr Bennet was probably the root cause of the rift..Mr Bennet can never be called a miser and was certainly a gentleman, though selfish,IMHO.He sounds diametrically opposite to Mr Collins senior.

I agree. Mr. Collins Sr. who brought his son up in "subjection", as well as being illiterate and miserly, sounds like the type of person who would take any disagreement or defiance as a personal insult. (Hmm. Sounds exactly like Lady Catherine!)

Imagine the young Mr. Bennet, well-educated and sharp-tongued, meeting stupidity and arrogance with biting sarcasm. It might have been the entail, politics or the weather which started the argument, but no matter what the subject, it would have got out of hand very quickly and probably festered with Mr. Collins Sr. for years.
