Scheming Charlotte   Written by Geri-Lynn (1/25/2004 6:48 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mr Collins proposes to Charlotte, penned by Deborah Julia
Are you new?

"...but Charlotte's kindness extended farther...it's object was nothing less than to secure her from any return of Mr. Collins' addresses, by engaging them towards herself."

I never really felt the weight of these words before this GR. It is strange to me that Charlotte would be using arts and allurements to turn Mr. Collins' head toward herself. I thought he easily transfered his affection to Charlotte from Lizzy because Charlotte was kind to him - not because she used her feminine wiles to make it happen! Of course, Lizzy had refused Mr. Collins, so he was fair game. Still, what would Lizzy have thought of her dear friend had she known about this scheme?

And how awkward it must have been whenever the Lucases visited Longborne - knowing that their daughter would one day be mistress of that house. They triumphed in that success (though silently, I'm certain). Still, it must have been the elephant in the room whwenever the two families got together.
