Money to live on   Written by Line (1/25/2004 5:15 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, More Mr. Collins Questions, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

] Would he then take over the exact earnings of Mr. Bennet and live in the similar condition of having little money on which to live?

Actually, I think 2000 pounds a year was a very comfortable income to live on. The problem was that in 22 years, the Bennets had not saved up any money for their daughters' dowries. Apart from his future inheritance, Mr. Collins already had a decent income from his present job, and when he finally inherited Longbourn, I think he would be in much better financial shape than Mr. Bennet, simply because Charlotte was a much better money manager than Mrs. Bennet!

However, you're right. If the Collinses failed to have a son, I think they would find themselves in the same predicament as the Bennets, and some even more distant male relative would inherit Longbourn!
