This is true, but as Julie mentions, the law could be at least partly circumvented if the bride-to-be had a smart, foresighted parent or guardian and a good lawyer (solicitor?) to draw up her marriage settlement (the equivalent of the modern "prenup") before the wedding. Of course, all too often this didn't happen.
