Entails..   Written by DeborahAnn (1/25/2004 12:35 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ah,...the entail(long), penned by JulieW
Are you new?

Can I add a little to the great info that Julie has already provided?

Entails were usedin order to prevent large estates being broken up and sold off, perhaps by a spendthrift son or passing away from the family if only a daughter were left to inherit. Until the 1878 Married Women's Property Act, everything a woman owned became her husband's on their marriage.

They were very restrictive and as those listed to in the document to receive the property--like Julie says were "life tenants" and not owners--that meant mortgages could not be raised on the property.

The scene from PP2 comes to mind where we see Mr. Bennet at night going over his account books and then shaking his head when the numbers are not adding up or at best leaving very little left over. Could this be the films way of showing the restrictions of the entail?
