Relationship of Collins, Sr to Mr Bennet   Written by kathleen (elder) (1/25/2004 12:26 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ah,...the entail(long), penned by JulieW
Are you new?

] Mr Collins father, who was Mr Bennet's uncle

Do we know this for certain? Your explanation about the name change is very interesting and convincing. I don't remember, however, that we ever had a specific relationship of Mr Collins' father to Mr Bennet.

Mr Bennet refers to Mr Collins as his cousin (Chapter 13, referring to Mr Collins' letter), but the narrator says (in Chapter 7)

Mr. Bennet's property consisted almost entirely in an estate of two thousand a year, which, unfortunately for his daughters, was entailed, in default of heirs-male, on a distant relation [emphasis mine]

Would a first cousin of Mr Bennet be considered a distant relation? Or perhaps the narrator is using distant to mean not well known? Hmmm, I shall have to look at this again, I see, which is never a hardship. :-)
