]Perhaps he wanted her to watch while he showed her how well-connected he was. It didn't occur to him that he needed an introduction, so he probably would never think that he might not be well received by Darcy, or that Elizabeth could actually dislike a member of Lady Catherine's family.

]In his mind, he was about to do something charming and sophisticated, and he wanted his intended wife to be his admiring audience while he did it. Poor Mr. Collins.

I would expect he's showing off not only his "connections" to Elizabeth, but his professed ability to mix in any sort of society whatsoever--yet more "advantages" to his situation.

I'm more inclined to say poor Elizabeth (and poor Mr. Darcy)...
