... Daphne meant "poor" as in "bad"? At the start of ch. 15, it says that the greatest part of Mr. Collins' life had been spent "under the guidance of an illiterate and miserly father" - not a life I would wish on any child! (And yes, I get the impression that Mr. Collins Senior was Mr. Bennet's social equal, at least.)
