As you point out, as his father was a cousin of Mr Bennet he is likely to have a gentry background. Would Lady C. accept anything less? Quite possibly, he didn't get along with his father. Maybe this is one reason he's so fawning over his patroness? Like begging for acceptance. My impression of Mr Collins has always been he was university educated and probably had a degree and even letters of recommendation to intially present to Lady Catherine; but having little intelligence and was 'not a man of sense', he lacked any understanding. He is an oddity, totally absurd. LOL! I wonder if JA based Mr Collins on a clergyman she knew?
