... from the opposite angle. If Darcy were officially engaged to his cousin, I think his best friend would be among the first to know about it, and through him, his sister, who is living in the same house with both men.

We know that JA (and probably her contemporaries) were not happy about secret engagements (in fact, there's a thread about secret engagements at the L&T board right now), so I think if Darcy were formally engaged, it would soon be public knowledge.

Even Wickham says only that "it is believed" that the two of them will marry, not that it is definite. This sounds more like the rumour mill again to me - yes, cousins did often marry to keep money in the family, but that's only a theory, not a fact, IMO.
